Dayum that kitchen is... Stacked

So we have begun...the semi-demo. I removed all of the hardware and left it to cook on low in a crockpot all day with dish soap. Most of the scum had come off by the end of the day but there was still some of the mystery white gunk that appears on dirty metal so i scubbed the dirtiest down then put them all to soak in white vinegar and later ended up adding some baking soda for good measure... I will add a pic when I make my 'spray painting hardware' post. However they are looking much better than before. lookin like theyre begging for some rustoleum hammered silver spray paint.
As you can see I have also started pulling out the 'econ-o-tile'. That was an accident... I was poking around with the measureing tape and one of them just popped off! So i started at it. There is some resilient brown..adhesive?..lurking but from what I have read online should loosen up with some goo-gone. Then I can scape away with my utility knife, the same one i stepped on yesterday and sliced open my toe, righht before work. Also please note the new cabinets.. My new layer. My stacked cabinets. And there will be stacked subway tile. I think we found our theme. One of those is 43" ($15) and one is 39" ($10)... 43 plus 39=...82 which is 7 less than 89" which is the exact length of the row. I originally thought it was 90" and was planning on spending 50 some odd dollars on those unfinished 30 x 12 cabinets at blank box store... A piece! But why would i pay and extra $125 dollars just to have it hang over an inch. No thanks. I will fill in the 3.5" gaps... Somewhow.

Just getting started...

I found my dream home and somehow everything coincided at the perfect moment, me getting a better job, qualifying for a loan and then before I knew it was mine (ours). It is a  1.5 story Cape Cod house, with 4 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The house was built in 1955 and has been immaculately cared for with very little updating, see below:

Well, we have only been homeowners for a week but I have been planning my renovations... refurbishments ever since I first saw our house on Zillow, starting in the kitchen...as you can see:
the original cabinets with the original hammered copper pulls and HL hinges (which seem to be the dirtiest thing in the kitchen), I will be replacing the cabinet pulls with porcelain but for the drawer pulls and hinges I will be cleaning them and spray painting them a hammered silver
-I can't tell if the vinyl flooring is the original from '55 but I checked and there is nothing underneath it but subfloor, but it will have to go because there is a brown stain creeping out from under the fridge. The husband wants tile but I'm not so sure I would like a cold, cold tile in the kitchen as little as we use heat in the winter. This is still TBD but will probably be one the last things we do anyways
-the countertops are amazing, in great condition and I can totally work with them. When we did my moms kitchen a few years ago the countertop people said that these old laminates are just about the most durable things out there. Also I am not a fan of granite at all and I think it is just a trend, my slightly grey laminates will be in style forever.
-The "tile" backsplash is, aside from being severely yellowed is actually not tile, while inspecting them one of them popped off. They are flimsy plastic Wilson "econ-o-tile" from the 50s. I will be ripping those off, removing the odd brown adhesive, and putting in stacked white subway tile with a black accent through the middle like below, but stacked tile instead of the offset brick pattern, which is actually surprisingly affordable.

-The brown appliances... will be staying! they are all in perfect working condition and are the most immaculate of the immaculate house. I chose colors that should compliment them... not easy
-So that brings us to colors! I will include the name of every paint color bc I hate when blogs do not include the paint name! How am I supposed to find it?! The wall cabinets will most likely be Valspar- Du jour this is one of the only ones I haven't decided on because it will also be the trim and all things white for the house so I want the rest of my colors up first. The base cabinets will Valspar Indigo Cloth, it is actually more Navy looking in real life. I originally bought Enchanted Navy based on the online swatch but when I got home I found out it was wayyyyy toooo purple. like violet purple. You must know that I hate purple. Barf. Many may be skeptical of the white/navy cabinet plan but let me show you my inspiration.
NAVY-CABINETS
Beautiful, Right? I know... Also I will be adding another layer of wall cabinets on top of the current ones (by the way I will be keeping the cabinets) This has been the trickiest idea so far.. Mainly because the dimensions. Above the fridge is 36", to the right of the sink is 33", along the stove wall is 79"(?!?) So it is fairly impossible to find exact sizes to match door for door without spending a fortune on custom cabinets. Also along the 79" wall the ceiling changes almost a whole inch, from 13"-14" space difference between main wall cabinet and ceiling. I have been scouring the Habitat ReStore for a month and I think I have the solution... I will have an entire post dedicated to this fragile problem later.
Aside from the kitchen our plans are pretty limited. I plan to extend the chair rail in the dining room all the way through the hall, except it is impossible to match, so will be slightly different... still working on that. I going to also add wainscoting under the chair rail... However I can't decide if I want traditional or board and batten... we will see what is more feasible. We also want to pull up the carpet in this area (dining/hall) (oh yeah the whole first floor has hardwood floors underneath the brand new carpet... they are apparently in decent shape) we want to keep the carpet in the living room and bedrooms for now, although that may change once I see those wood beauties...838 Furlong Dr, Lexington, KY 40504
Other than that it is mainly just painting... I will have (all Valspar) Nostalgia on the largest wall in the living room, Crucible on the bathroom walls that should compliment the beige (ick) tiles and white fixtures, the hallway walls and kitchen (where there is no wainscoting or cabinets) will be Lilac Macchiato, I know I said I hate purple but this is not your grandmas lilac, it really looks more like a soft blue or light gray, and speaking of grandmas.. Despite my husbands griping, I will be keeping the lovely wallpaper in the dining room, the picture does not do it justice... you'll see.

Stay tuned to see these and many other updates all Do It Myself and as frugally as possible. My goal is to do everything for under $500 dollars. The kitchen floor may be the cookie crumbler.
